Title: G17-Prime Time Palm Beach County Newspaper Project Grant Recommendation:
I recommend that the School Board approve the Prime Time Palm Beach County Newspaper Project Grant, for $53,500, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of grant activities.
Description:
- This Newspaper Project will bring together students from ten community sites or middle school after-school sites from the eastern and western communities (five from the Riviera Beach area and five from the Belle Glade, Pahokee, and South Bay areas) to produce a quarterly teen newspaper with original writing and photography. The newspaper will be distributed throughout Palm Beach County after-school programs.
- During the project youth will keep a notebook/journal of their experiences in developing a newspaper for reflection purposes and documentation of service hours.
- The purpose of the newspaper is to enhance the visual arts, graphic design, creative writing, and critical thinking capacity of middle school age youth in the targeted areas.
- The 10 community based sites will self-select to participate in this project. Approximately 100 community middle school after-school students will participate in this project.
- The impact of the project will be the development and distribution of the community middle school after-school newspaper and the development of a web page.
- Participants will have the opportunity to visit and job shadow at The Palm Beach Post.
Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the Special Revenue-Other Funds Budget is an increase of $53,500 for one year. All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of revenue. There is no financial impact to the Operating Budget.
