Title: G19-Florida Learn and Serve Grants

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Florida Learn and Service Grants, for $87,234, effective July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of grant activities.

Description:

Fifteen Service Learning grant applications were submitted to the Florida Department of Education for school year 2007-2008. All project proposals contain reading components to support Just Read! Florida. If all proposals are funded, $87,324 in total will be awarded to Palm Beach County to support the service learning projects briefly described below.

Department of Safe Schools – Renewal grant for $6,000

§         Funds will be used to target specific schools for service learning project implementation. The selected schools are Banyan Creek Elementary, U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary, Jupiter Middle, and Forest Hill High. These schools have veteran service learning practitioners who will mentor peers through the process of a quality service learning project.

Christa McAuliffe Middle – Renewal grant for $3,386

§         Art students will create: a Florida Wildlife Activity Book for the benefit of local 3rd graders at a Title 1 elementary school; All About Me books for the children of clients using a local food pantry/hunger organization; and original hand-formed ceramic bowls to be auctioned off at an Empty Bowls Banquet that the students will help to plan and implement for the benefit of the local food pantry.

Gold Coast School – Renewal grant for $9,000

§         Students will continue to research, plan, plant, and cultivate a community vegetable garden that is used to grow food for senior citizens, the homeless, the hungry, and shut-ins throughout the community. Meals will be prepared by students, business partners, faculty and staff, and delivered to various sites throughout the county. Students will also continue to use compost bins to recycle cafeteria waste, research native plants to utilize Xeriscaping, and create habitats for native birds and butterflies.

Hammock Pointe Elementary – Renewal grant for $4,182

§         ESOL students will use computer based technology to create and print original books, read “ebooks” written by children around the world and become buddy readers and writers to other ESOL students by using the RealeWriter and RealeLibrary software.

John I. Leonard High – Pilot grant for $5,076

§         This project involves several different high school classes providing service to students at a local elementary school. Low performing high school students in reading will become book buddies; drama students will write, produce, and perform skits; and other students will create costumes to be used in the skits.

Alternative Education

§         All of the ten Alternative Education sites listed below submitted proposals that involve oral history projects featuring student writing and artwork depicting survivors of foreign torture and abuse such as Holocaust survivors, refugees from Darfur, etc. The students will have the opportunity to converse with and get to know these survivors, their families, and their tremendous strength and resilience through tele-classes. The students will then translate what they have learned into their writings and artwork which will be printed in booklet form and shared with all stakeholders.  Each application is for $5,968.
