Title: AC3-Pine Jog Environmental Education Center Agreement

Recommendation:
I recommend that the PBCSB approve the renewal agreement with the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center in the amount of $31,000.

Description:

The Pine Jog Environmental Education Center through the FAU College of Education will provide a comprehensive professional development program to fifty K-5 teachers who apply during an open enrollment period.  Preference will be given to teachers from Pine Jog Model Schools.  The Pine Jog Model Schools include: Beacon Cove Intermediate, Cholee Lake Elementary, Coral Sunset Elementary, Del Prado Elementary, Discovery Key Elementary, Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary, Freedom Shores Elementary, Greenacres Elementary, Melaleuca Elementary, Northmore Elementary, Palm Springs Elementary, West Gate Elementary and Westward Elementary.

The yearly program supports rigorous professional development for teachers in science content and inquiry skills correlated to the Sunshine State Standards Science Benchmarks.  It also emphasizes development and implementation of science literacy [interdisciplinary] instruction for a standards-based curriculum and other instructional strategies that reflect focus areas of the School District Key Results, as well as the preparation of teachers and students for FCAT Science.  The program reflects current research, compliments the adopted science textbook series, links to content and student performance standards, and provides for on-going follow-up activities.

The benefit to the district is that all teachers will have access to a selection of model lessons and science units produced by the teachers involved in the Pine Jog professional development program through the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center's website (www.pinejog.org).  Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to share their learned experiences with peers around the district.

Program evaluation will be completed by the district staff, Pine Jog staff and teacher participants. The evaluation consists of teacher participation and evaluations, follow-up implementation surveys and action plans, and student assessments.

In 2006-2007, thirty (30) elementary schools participated in the Science Summer Institute professional development program as a result of the open enrollment process. Under the current contractual agreement, 193 teachers have received over 4,100 hours of professional development; 5,230 students across the district have participated in interactive, standards-based field experiences in conjunction with integrated science instruction.

Financial Impact:
The financial impact to the district is $31,000.  The funding source is the operational budget of the Department of K-12 Instruction.
