Title: Approve William T. Dwyer High School's Choral Department's Trip to London

Description:

The group of 40 students (29 girls and 11 boys) will be chaperoned by two school board employees and 5 adult chaperones.  A representative of the Heritage Festival will also accompany the group throughout the visit.  The trip will provide the students with the opportunity to perform, compete and experience cultures from a different country.  The purpose of the trip is:

Ø      To have the students perform at an International Vocal Festival and Competition.  Choruses from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and the rest of Europe have the opportunity to participate at this Festival.

Ø      To have the William T. Dwyer choral students perform for top international adjudicators.

Ø      To receive constructive written and taped comments for further musical growth.

Ø      To have students play and receive on-stage critiques at the mini-clinic session.

Ø      For the students to experience and have the opportunity to perform at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Ø      For the students to perform with local students and share their talents with one another.

Ø      For the students to experience the social, musical and cultural aspects of a wonderful capital.

The cost of the trip is $1500 per participant that includes all travel costs, meals except for lunches, accommodations and tour fees.  The students are able to raise funds for the trip through cheesecake sales, car washes, a silent auction/benefit concert, business sponsors and grant money.  Every effort is made to assure that all eligible students have the opportunity to participate regardless of economic hardship.

The benefits to the district include:

Ø      Representing Palm Beach County and William T. Dwyer High School.

Ø      The knowledge and appreciation gained by students from performing with students from other Countries.

Ø      Representation of the quality of programs offered by Palm Beach County Schools and the high level of academic and talented students.

Ø      Creating an exchange opportunity for British students to visit and experience William T. Dwyer High School and Palm Beach County.

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve an educational trip for William T. Dwyer High School Chorus to travel to London, England from March 21 until March 25, 2005 to perform at an International Vocal Festival and Competition.  The students will also be visiting a local high school, meeting and singing with the choral students and performing a joint concert.
