Title: Implementation Grant for Project C.H.I.L.D. To Cypress Trails Elementary

Description:

4   Cypress Trails Elementary School first implemented Project C.H.I.L.D. (Changing How Instruction is Delivered) in July, 2004. Currently, the school has one primary cluster.

4    The grant will provide the necessary funds to purchase the Project C.H.I.L.D. K-2 cluster to include all C.H.I.L.D. materials, correlated software, station activities, training and on-site coaching for the first year.

4    The school will pay for substitutes for training, conference registrations and travel expenses in the amount of $5,051.00.  The cluster upgrade will include classroom materials and software upgrades for the computers at a cost not to exceed $12.00 per student.  These costs will be funded by School Improvement funds approved by the School Advisory Council.

4    The academic focus is on reading, writing and mathematics.  Students loop with teachers within the cluster.  The looping provides academic stability and acceleration for the students, and student familiarity for the teachers.  Students in Project C.H.I.L.D. have multi-dimensional learning opportunities through station activities that provide hands-on, written and computer access which meets the needs of students with visual, auditory and concrete/tactile learning styles.

4     Students are evaluated on the District Assessment, Star Reading Assessment, Scholastic Reading Inventory and Palm Beach Writes.

The Donald A. Burns Foundation has donated $9,999.00 for the grant period of December 9, 2004 to June 2, 2005.  The School Advisory Council has voted to use School Improvement funds totaling $5,051.00.  These funds will be added to cover the remaining funding for a total of $15,050.00 to Institute for School Innovation for Project C.H.I.L.D.

Recommendation:

I recommend that the School Board approve the Implementation Grant Application for Project C.H.I.L.D. for Cypress Trails Elementary School and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all documents and contracts related to the grant which are required for implementation of the grant activities.

Financial Impact:
The proceeds from this grant will be deposited in the school's internal accounts and will be used to pay some of the expenses of the implementation of Project C.H.I.L.D.  The funds will be appropriated at Cypress Trails Elementary School.  All grant related expenditures and contracts are authorized for payment up to the amount of the revenue.
