The School District of Palm Beach County, Florida - Nutrition Standards/Promotion

Celebrating 10 Years Of Wellness

District Vending

During the year, a presentation was given to elementary school principals with regard to the Smart Snacks in School guidelines. Details regarding these guidelines had been communicated via a bulletin the prior school year and language was included in the School Food Service Management Policy 6.185. In an effort to ensure compliance with the Smart Snacks in School guidelines as it related to vending machines, another bulletin was sent out on November 4, 2015. The Nutrition Services Team developed an assessment tool to evaluate the vending machines at all middle and high schools for compliance. While visiting school sites, team members began evaluating the products in vending machines that were accessible to students. A full assessment of each school was not able to be completed. The goal will be to have all middle and high school vending machines surveyed during the next school year. Lastly, the team assisted in the revision of the District’s Vending Services Bid.

14C-42D Vending Services – Term Contract for Beverage and Snack Vending Services

The School Food Service Department has been working with vendors and manufacturers to ensure all snacks and beverages sold through the cafeteria are in compliance with the Smart Snacks in School guidelines. The Nutrition Services Team is responsible for approving the beverages and snacks submitted by the vendors and maintaining the approved lists. The current list of approved snacks and beverages for vending can be found below.

District bids and contracts were updated to align the language with the nutrition standards to include the Term Contract for Beverage and Snack Vending Services(April 2014-April 2016). This contract is no longer effective, as the School District decided to not renew Term Contract # 14C-42D after the completion of the first three years. The Purchasing Department in collaboration with the School Food Service Department drafted a new term contract to be effective for the next school year 2016 - 2017.
