Nutrition Standards/Promotion – Middle School Reengineering Program

After observing the positive changes that the High School Reengineering Program had on the student behavior both in the cafeteria and throughout the day, the School Food Service (SFS) Department saw the need to pilot a smaller version of the program at the middle school level. Principal, Corey Brooks of John F. Kennedy (JFK) Middle School then reached out to SFS looking to provide an atmosphere for his students that would recharge them for the second half of the day. Therefore, JFK Middle was selected as the first Middle School Reengineering Program (MSRP) site for the 2012-2013 school years.

Due to the collaborative effort by District’s Facility Services and the School Food Service Department, Sisca Construction Services, and Tercilla Courtemanche Architects, Inc. the project was successfully completed for the first day of school on August 20, 2012. The Grand Opening for this program was held on August 15, 2012. District Leadership, School Administration and Staff, Community Partners and School Food Service staff were in attendance. When the doors opened, on August 19, 2013, on the first day of school, the students were excited about the enhancement of their cafeteria and the increase in menu offerings. On average, JFK Middle School serves 45 additional meals each day with a total of 85% of the students participating in the National School Lunch Program.
