Student Crisis Response
Student Mental Health Crisis Response Policy
Student Mental Health Crisis Policy (5.20) was drafted and approved by the School Board in the Fall of the 2020-
2021 school year. The policy contained language regarding student mental health crisis events and referrals
for involuntary hospitalizations. The policy specifically requires prevention, intervention, and postvention
strategies and activities that protect and strengthen student wellness.
Crisis Assessment, Prevention, Education and Support (CAPE) Team
The CAPE Team is composed of credentialed and skilled staff that are both flexible and proactive in responding
to students that are experiencing significant persistent or acute mental health or behavioral health crises
on a school campus. The CAPE Team consists of 4 individual sites throughout the District and collaborates
with schools to improve support to students, schools andfamilies. For FY22, the CAPE Team was dispatched
148 times, provided consultation to school mental health teams 283 times, and provided support during
scheduled school-based meetings 151 times. Throughout the entire school year, the teams used a blend
of Google Meet and face-to-face interactions, provided intensive behavioral and mental health support to
students and schools by dispatching for immediate assessment and intervention for students experiencing
a significant mental health crisis. The team also collaborated with schools’ teams in support meetings for
students with complex/chronic behavioral and mental health challenges, provided mentoring services with
students, and engaged in case management for families.
The CAPE Team continues to increase its prevention and education efforts by providing professional
development through the Wellness Bucket offerings, Mental Health 101 and 102 courses, interdepartmental
training, and sessions in the fall Student Mental Health and Wellness Conference.
Co-located Mental Health Professionals (MHP)
The Department provided school-based mental health care through the placement of agency employed,
co-located mental health professionals in schools to expand student access and supplement the work
of District mental health professionals (e.g., school counselors, school psychologists, family counselors) and
collaborative agencies through Behavioral Health Agreements. Co-located mental health professionals are
agency supervised and operate in alignment with school teams, policies, and procedures to provide individual
