Mulch
Mulching of garden beds is acceptable and only District approved
mulch suppliers are allowed. Environmentally friendly, non-dyed
mulches that are natural in color must be used for school gardens.
The following types of sustainably sourced, natural mulch are
recommended by the University of Florida, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, as Florida Friendly Landscaping practices:
Pine Straw Mulch (elementary schools only)
These are pine needles (sold in bales) which come from pine
plantations, producing paper and wood products.Unlike some
mulches, pine needles are not likely to wash away because they
knit together.
Melaleuca Mulch is made from the invasive exotic trees. The
product is cured at a high temperature to kill seeds.
Eucalyptus Mulch typically comes from plantations in South and
Central Florida where the trees are grown specifically for mulch.
They grow quickly, so this mulch is considered renewable.
