When applying mulch, schools should use a thin layer, as opposed
to thick layers, and keep mulch 12 inches from any building to
prevent pests.
Donations of mulch and garden treatment products do not
usually meet District standards and must be considered carefully
before acceptance. Mulch in particular is often contaminated
with invasive plant seeds, unwanted vegetative material and
sometimes, broken glass or other trash. As a Best Practice, contact
the Garden Collaboration Team for guidance if your school has
been offered a donation of mulch.
Wheelchair accessibility is necessary to be compliant with the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Engineered wood
fiber or shell rock compacted surfaces are recommended for
garden pathways. Consult with your Maintenance and Plant
Operations Area Manager for more information. He or she will
consult with Building Code Services (BCS) as necessary.
