 COMMUNITY
Free Food for Families at Summer Feeding Sites
Living Hungry, a non-profit organization working to end childhood hunger
in our community, reached out to the School Food Service Department
with an opportunity to provide additional food to families. Meal kits and
organic juice boxes were donated by Farm Share and Jooociful Fruit Juice
and delivered by Sysco Southeast to our schools’ kitchens the week of July
9, 2018. Schools Food Service worked with their Managers, who in-turn
worked with each Principal, to help distribute the food to families in need. In
total 36,288 meal kits and 24,000 juice boxes were delivered to 14 schools
 and provided to families.

In addition, Living Hungry, Farm Share, and the School District partnered
again prior to the Winter Break and Spring Break to bring more needed
food to the students and families. 7,488 meals were provided to families
at 7 schools for the 2018 Winter Break and 59,520 meals were provided to
families at 52 schools for 2019 Spring Break.

 Health Fairs

Each school year the School Food Service Department likes to provide at least one health fair to a school. In
FY19, on November 16, 2018, a SFS sponsored health fair was held at New Horizons Elementary. This was
our first, full day Health Fair which was specifically designed to create a “wellness experience” for all students.
To accommodate the 687 students enrolled at New Horizons Elementary, in addition to lunch, 14 wellness
stations were created in the areas of Nutrition, Fitness and Mindfulness.
