Academic Excellence and Growth

Objective 1: Ensure all students engage in teaching and learning that results
        in academic excellence.

        Adult and Community Education

The Department of Adult and Community Education plays a critical role in developing the underserved community
members including those who wish to learn English as well as those seeking to earn a high school diploma. Many of the
20,000 adult students served each year are parents of School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC) K-12 students. The
department provides comprehensive instructional programs designed to improve the employability of adult students by
increasing the percentage of those who enter post-secondary education and earn a degree, certificate, and/or industry
certification. Programs help to improve the occupational outlook for all students through the acquisition of communication
skills and cultural competencies that enhance the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in English.

        Services include:
        • Pre-Apprentice courses in Plumbing, Carpentry, Welding, Electrical, and Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning
           (HVAC)
        • Apprenticeship courses in Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, and HVAC
        • Commercial Driver’s License – Class A
        • Medical Programs in Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician, Phlebotomy, Home Health Aide, and Medical Lab Assisting
        • Family Literacy Programs at multiple elementary schools
        • Florida Teacher Exam Prep for teachers and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep for students
        • Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Adult High School (including Co-enrolled)
        • Integrated Education and Training – Learn English while earning a workforce certification

During FY23, the department continued the rapid expansion of career training programs including medical, pre-apprentice,
and apprenticeship courses to meet the rising workforce demand. In response, the department created a plan to open five
technical centers with strategic workforce programs located throughout the county.
