African, African American, Latino, Holocaust, and Social Studies

African, African American, Latino, Holocaust, and Social Studies are a vital part of the District’s initiative to provide an
educational experience that culturally sustains all students and reinforces a positive school culture on every campus.
Academic engagement is positively impacted when all students’ cultures, perspectives, and unique experiences are affirmed
in schools. This team provides school sites with the support needed to establish this environment in schools. Supports
include the development of curriculum and instructional materials that accurately represent students from diverse racial
identities, ethnicities, and genders while highlighting their societal contributions.

The team has cultivated vital relationships with
community stakeholders and local universities. The
        staff has standing relationships with:

During FY23, the team hosted and organized events to
engage District employees, teachers, students, and the
        community related to:
          • Black History Month
          • Hispanic Heritage Month
          • International Holocaust Remembrance Day

In addition, the staff brought the tragic yet compelling stories of Holocaust survivors to numerous elementary, middle, and
high school students across the District. All of this was designed to increase awareness of the diverse histories, cultures, and
social dynamics within the local community.

FY23 culminated with the 29th Annual African, African American, and Caribbean Studies Summer Institute and the 11th
Annual Hispanic/Latino Studies Summer Institute. This year’s theme for both events was Get it Right: The Journey of Self-
reflection and Transformation for Educators and Leaders. The institutes aim to guide educators and leaders through the
process of examining their beliefs and practices around creating environments conducive to all learning types.
