This is all part of our “We’re ALL In” campaign to support
our LGBTQ+ students and staff. Through this campaign,
The School District of Palm Beach County (SDPBC)
support inclusive policies on Protecting Students from
Discrimination and Harassment (5.001), and Bullying and
Harassment (5.002), as well as the District Diversity and
Equity Committee (1.0971), and Equity Policy (1.041). We
also supported inclusive curriculum such as the Human
Growth & Development curriculum and instructional
materials, and the diversity libraries in Elementary, Middle
and High School’s Media Centers. Finally, supportive staff
can be identified in various ways. We offer posters and
stickers that a school may display. We have also designed
a badge, which staff can wear with their name badge that identifies them as a supportive, caring adult for
LGBTQ+ students.
Visibility is so important. We were able to start a Pride In SDPBC LGBTQ+
Employee Resource Group for FY22. We met each month as a social group,
and had several events, including a painting night on June 2, 2022 and a
Picnic at Okeeheelee Park on June 24, 2022. Health Education Specialist, Mr.
Pete Stewart, was recognized twice for all the work he does with our LGBTQ+
youth. First, he was recognized as the 2022 Equality Florida Champion for
Education at the All Together Now Conference on February 24, 2022. That
was followed with a second recognition by the Florida Diversity Council
as their 2022 LGBTQ+ Ally Award. Mr. Stewart was indeed honored by the
recognition, but noted that he could not have accomplished these goals
without supportive leadership and the GSA Club Sponsors, Principals, and
staff in schools.
We were in turn able to honor Julie Seaver, Executive
Director of Compass Community Center in Lake Worth
Beach, as our First Annual Award Winner of our “We’re
ALL In - Champion for Equity and Education” Award at the
Wellness Celebration on June 7, 2022. Julie was honored
to receive this award for all that she and Compass
do to partner with the District to support our youth.
Finally, we also updated our LGBTQ+ Critical Support
Guide, which provides guidance on many issues related to
LGBTQ+ students and staff. The guide touches on many
issues from names and pronouns use, to use of public facilities, and it is available on the District’s Portal site
through the “We’re ALL In” Tile.
