As an educational substance abuse prevention and early intervention program, FACE IT is making a difference in the lives of adolescents and their families. In nine years, this program has saved 14,414 students from out-of-school suspension days. The average recidivism rate for repeat alcohol, tobacco, and other drug school offenses is only 4%. Keeping students in class increases the likelihood of achieving academic excellence.
FACE IT, met the School District’s goal of Parental Involvement by achieving 100% parent/caregiver attendance at every session, which supported a “no use” message regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD). According to program pre-test and post-test results, participants showed an increase in ATOD knowledge and a positive change in short-term ATOD attitudes (Palm Beach County Health Department Tobacco Prevention and Control FACE IT Evaluation Report, 2008).
This nationally awarded educational life skills program supports the health of our youth by offering substance abuse prevention to youth ages 12 to 18 who have alcohol, tobacco, and other drug issues. With parental participation required in each session, it emphasizes the importance of relationship building and communication in helping teens make healthy decisions, and empowers families to extend the learning beyond the confines of the classroom. In addition to increased knowledge, participants showed a positive change in short-term ATOD attitudes (Palm Beach County Health Department Tobacco Prevention and Control FACE IT Evaluation Report, 2008). Furthermore, results from Participant Feedback Forms indicated that 85% of families had increased communication among its family members.
The 422 middle and high school youth (and their parents/caregivers) who completed FACE IT in the 2011-2012 school year (an 87% completion rate) saved 1,649 out-of-school suspension days, thus allowing the students to maintain their academic progress. Over 8,500 individuals have been served since FACE IT began in October 2003.
