3. Modifications of underground site utility systems, other
than minor irrigation system changes. Work with your
school’s Maintenance and Plant Operations Area Manager to
coordinate minor changes.
4. Installation of a large above-ground trellis or other structure
• Small one or two person benches or a “single person pass
through” trellis are not included.
Before beginning or modifying any school garden, please contact
your MPO Area Manager to ensure that the site is suitable for a
garden and to confirm that the space has working irrigation. If a
permit is required, your MPO Area Manager will alert BCS. If a permit
is necessary, BCS will assist with the permitting process. If you are
starting a new garden on your campus, before reaching out to
your Area Manager, connect with the technology representative
at your school to create an aerial view of the potential garden
locations using Google Earth. Then, mark up the Google Earth
map to clearly identify the potential locations.
District and Code Requirements
Structures
Very often when garden spaces are created, hardscapes ---
benches, trellises, arbors, rocks, etc. are introduced into the area to
create an ambiance. Our school gardens are no different. (NOTE:
Fountains are not permitted on school campuses.) While building
permits are NOT usually required for these items, the following
standards must be followed:
Wind
All above ground items must be:
• Anchored to resist hurricane force winds
• Heavy enough to resist hurricane force winds
• Taken inside a building if a hurricane or severe windstorm is
approaching
