High-Impact Reading Interventions and Targeted Supports Grant
The District recently received a High-Impact Reading Interventions and Targeted Supports (HIITS) grant for our K-5 Reading
Intervention team. The team designed the grant to create a unified, comprehensive, and systematic reading intervention
plan to be implemented across the District. As part of the grant, school and District leaders attended professional learning
on the science of reading, evidence-based strategies, and intervention monitoring.

Over 100 staff, comprising twenty-three school teams, attended the District’s first Summer Reading Intervention Institute
to develop operational plans for serving students at their schools. Throughout the school year, schools participated in
instructional rounds, studied intervention problems of practice, and generated next steps designed to improve student
        outcomes.

        Secondary Literacy

Secondary Literacy B.E.S.T. Teacher Leader Cohort and Literacy Instructional Coaches Cohort
In FY24, the Department of Secondary Education continued its B.E.S.T. ELA teacher leader cohort designed to develop and
support a cohort of teachers in becoming school-site experts to lead the implementation of Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for
ELA on their campuses. Each quarter, our B.E.S.T. ELA teacher leaders had the opportunity to deepen their understanding
of the B.E.S.T. ELA Standards, Instructional Practice Guide Core Actions, and how rigor and high expectations of all
students impact teaching and learning. The department supported the teacher leaders through interactive practice, text-
based discussion, and curriculum planning. B.E.S.T. ELA teacher leaders were equipped with the tools necessary to lead
professional learning at their school site for coaching, modeling, and support.

        Secondary Literacy B.E.S.T. Professional Learning
To assist schools and teachers with effectively implementing Florida’s B.E.S.T. ELA Standards and instructional materials,
the Department of Secondary Education offered a series of professional learning sessions to all teachers. In FY24, these
        session topics included:
          • B.E.S.T. ELA Overview
          • B.E.S.T. ELA Overview for Administrators
          • B.E.S.T. ELA Writing Scoring MS | B.E.S.T. ELA Writing Scoring HS
