Classroom Management System and Positive Behavior Support
Classroom Management System
CHAMPS, an acronym for Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement,
and Participation, is a practical framework that educators use to
set clear expectations for students before major activities and
transitions in the classroom. Through CHAMPS, teachers learn
proactive strategies to structure for success, reduce misbehavior
before it happens, focus on positive behavior and student strengths,
and use an instructional approach to correct behavioral missteps.
In FY24, the Department of Safe Schools trained approximately 450
teachers in CHAMPS and offered side-by-side support, significantly
improving classroom dynamics and student engagement.
CHAMPS training in action
The District’s Single School Culture for Behavior team provided transformative, proactive, and positive classroom
management support aligned to the practices and strategies of Randy Sprick’s Safe & Civil Schools CHAMPS training and
Dr. Bill Jenson’s Tough Kid Practical Classroom Management Strategies. The training resources and content are based on
the research outlining how effective teachers implement PBIS strategies in their classrooms.
The evidence-based CHAMPS approach helped teachers create highly successful classroom management plans that:
• Include high expectations for all students’ success.
• Build positive relationships with students.
• Create consistent, predictable classroom routines.
• Teach students how to behave successfully.
• Observe and monitor student behavior and data.
• Provide frequent positive feedback.
• Correct misbehavior in a calm, consistent, and fluent manner.
Positive Behavior Intervention Support
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, multi-tiered framework for supporting students’
behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. All schools implement PBIS systems and practices based
on the seven essential components that are used in the District:
1. Administrator support, participation, and leadership
2. Common purpose and approach to discipline – the team process
3. Define positive expectations for all students and staff
4. Procedures for teaching expected behaviors
5. Continuum of procedures for encouraging expectations
6. Continuum of procedures for discouraging inappropriate behavior
7. Procedures for ongoing monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the PBIS system
