                                                                                                                                   Project Based Learning
                                                                                                                                   21st Century Community Learning Centers give students the opportunity to learn through Project Based
                                                                                                                                   Learning.  The following are reasons why Project Based Learning is beneficial:
                                                                                                                                            o    Allows for a variety of learning styles.
                                                                                                                                            o    Utilizes hands-on approaches.
                                                                                                                                            o    Students have ownership of their learning within the curriculum.
                                                                                                                                            o    “Real” world oriented.
                                                                                                                                            o    Provides for in-depth understanding.
                                                                                                                                            o    The learning process is valued as well as the learning project.
                                                                                                                                            o    Learning cuts across curricular areas - multidisciplinary in nature.
                                                                                                                                   21st CCLC Elementary School Programs for FY19:
                                                                                                                                            •  Bright Starz: Liberty Park, Lincoln, and Orchard View
        21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC)                                                                                      •  Clever Kidz: Northmore, Pleasant City, and Roosevelt
                                                                                                                                            •  Cosmic Kidz: Lantana, Palmetto, and West Gate
        The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant is authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the                               •  Kool Kidz: Grove Park and Washington
        Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001.                           •  Rising Starz: CO Taylor, Highland, and Indian Pines
        The focus of this program is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children attending                           •  Shimmering Starz: Pine Grove, Rolling Green, and Seminole Trails
        Title 1 eligible schools.  Afterschool and Summer Programming is of no cost to eligible students and their                          •  Super Starz: Palm Springs, South Grade, and Starlight Cove
        families.                                                                                                                           •  Wonder Kidz: Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Lake Park, and West Riviera


        As stated in the federal statute, the specific purposes of the law are to:                                                                   SDPBC 21st CCLC is submitting an RFP that will add four new grants and
                                                                                                                                                                        an additional 12 schools for FY20.
                •  Provide opportunities for academic enrichment, providing services to help students, particularly
                students who attend low-performing schools, to meet State and local student academic achievement
                standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and mathematics.
                • Offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities to reinforce and
                complement the regular academic program such as: art, music, youth development activities,
                character education, recreation, technology education, and drug and violence prevention programs.
                •  Offer families of students opportunities for literacy and related educational development.


        21st CCLC Afterschool and Summer Programming is designed to complement and enrich school day learning
        including:
                                                                                                                                   Staff Development
              •  Reading and Literacy
              •  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)                                                                 All staff working in District elementary afterschool programs are highly qualified.  Within six months of hire
              •  Physical Education                                                                                                staff must complete Positive Ways to Work with Children, a training designed to prepare them for their new
              •  Health and Wellness                                                                                               role in the afterschool program.  They must also complete Playground Safety training and receive First Aid/
              •  Character Education                                                                                               CPR/AED certification.  Once these requirements have been met, an additional twelve hours of professional
              •  Family Services                                                                                                   development must be completed annually.  In order to assist programs with this requirement, the Department
              •  Service Learning                                                                                                  of Extended Learning (Afterschool Programming) collaborates with other District departments and its partners
              •  Social Emotional Learning                                                                                         to offer training to staff throughout the school year.
