Innovative School Project
The Innovative School Project, envisioned by Superintendent Burke, has brought project-based learning (PBL) to the
students and community at Roosevelt ES. Through the implementation of PBL, PreK through second grade students engaged
in deeper learning experiences, building their skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication,
and content expertise.
Roosevelt ES students engaged in lessons during their project-based learning units
Project Goals:
• To develop an innovative school model for the Roosevelt ES community that centers on excellence, equity, and deeper
learning in an environment where voice and agency are celebrated
• To develop an innovative school that will delight and inspire families in the community
Current successes of the Innovative School Project include:
• Implemented three PBL units - The Natural World, World Stories, and The World of Work
• Each PBL unit culminated in an exhibition, where students showcased their learning and the projects they developed
in each unit.
• Increased family engagement - over 100 families attended the first exhibition with continued high attendance for
subsequent exhibitions.
• Professional development for Roosevelt ES faculty - assistant principal and three teacher leaders attended the Deeper
Learning Conference at High Tech High in San Diego, CA, to learn about additional practices and resources for PBL
implementation.
• Planned and developed vocal and band programs
