A plan for STEM is not complete without considering coding, as the majority of all new jobs in
STEM are in computing (71%). The Palm Beach County School District has formally
partnered with Code.org to bring coding awareness and curriculum resources to all grade
levels. This is an important step for the District to take as nationwide data from Code.org
shows 9 in 10 parents or guardians want their children to study computer science while only
1 in 4 schools actually teach computer programming. A District plan to increase coding was
presented to schools in March of 2016. In addition to supporting implementation of this
curriculum, the District is also encouraging schools to continue participating in the annual
Hour of Code which takes place every December as part of Computer Science Education
Week, another annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take an interest in
               computer science.

               College and Career Readiness
Technological advances and global competition continue to transform the nature of work at
an ever-growing pace. As a result, jobs today and those in the future will require more
knowledge, better skills and more flexibility. Assuring that every high school graduate is both
college and career ready, Career and Technical Education establishes a preparation process
to meet the demands of the 21st century, and promotes postsecondary enrollment and/or a
smooth transition into the workplace. The District Implements Career Pathways,
encompassing rigorous programs of study, to give students the academic preparation,
direction, and career-related knowledge to help them plan studies that are in line with their
interests, abilities, and career goals. 97% of students who participate in Career Pathway
programs of study graduate on time.
