Supporting Families
The District values the collaboration between parents and/or guardians, and school staff as instrumental in the
promotion of a positive environment for learning and developmental growth for their students. Following the
Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model, it is our goal to encourage families to participate
in the wellness initiative in our District to support students’ physical, social, behavioral, and emotional well-
being.
During FY21, the ESOL and Migrant Education programs under the Department of Multicultural Education
facilitated Family Engagement Nights, educating families with activities to support learning at home,
presentations on various programs provided by the District, as well as online resources for students and
families.
In addition, in FY21, it was necessary to reach out to our families virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virtual Family Engagement Nights were held throughout the school year in the following languages: English,
Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Q’anjobal, and Mam. This experience was new to many families in the
community. Families were able to learn and face challenges into a new technology experience connecting with
schools and district personnel. The Migrant Education Program held many virtual parent/family involvement
events throughout the school year.
The Welcome Center assisted thousands of families during FY21 by helping them with the registrations
process, arranging vaccinations for over 90 students through the visits of the immunization van, and providing
guidance to families affected by the pandemic via emails, phone calls, or virtual meetings.
In collaboration with TRiO from Palm Beach State College, Florida Atlantic University, and representatives
from the DREAM US, the Welcome Center hosted seven (7) scholarship and college/university application
assistance workshops for English Language Learners (ELLs) and for students in the Migrant Education Program
throughout the District.
As part of the Department of Multicultural Education, the Migrant Education Program (MEP) continued to
provide monthly Parent/Family Involvement Night events throughout the school year for parents/guardians
of migrant students, including an Open House at the beginning of the year. Topics for these events focused on
resources for parents to better support their migrant students, such as scholarship information for secondary
migrant students, reading and math strategies that parents can implement at home, and resources related to
adult education.
Due to the pandemic, these family events were facilitated virtually, recorded, and saved onto the program’s
YouTube Playlist, so parents can have easy access to the information provided. After each virtual parent/
family involvement event, the MEP facilitated a Meal Drive thru Distribution event where migrant families
received hot meals and related academic resources. During FY21, more than 370 different migrant families
attended an MEP Parent/family Involvement Night event.
