Living Skills in the Schools (LSIS)
Living Skills in the Schools (LSIS) has brought substance abuse prevention education to District’s schools for
over 20 years and has reached over 391,000 students and families since 1999. In the 2021-2022 school year,
LSIS reached 65,000 students in more than 64 schools throughout Palm Beach County and delivered 2,122
in-school presentations.
LSIS maintains a comprehensive, tiered curriculum differentiated by age group. Programming is adapted to
meet each school’s needs, issues, structure, and goals. LSIS is DCF licensed, CARF accredited, and an approved
alternative on the toolkit to meet the substance abuse mandate. The LSIS staff have qualifying credentials
and provide several in-house languages: English, French, Spanish, and Creole.
The organization is led by Dr. Suzanne Spencer, CEO, who has been recognized as a transformational
contributor to the mental health community through her vision and innovation. She has worked closely
with numerous schools and departments within The School District of Palm Beach County to provide opioid
substance abuse programming for both students and parents/caregivers.
Over the past 3 years, Dr. Spencer has worked closely with the School Climate Transformation Grant/
Project Connect to provide opioid prevention programming for the 9 participating schools that the grant
supports. LSIS conducted a Beginning Awareness and Basic Education Skills (B.A.B.E.S) program and 5th
grade prevention speaker at the elementary level. At the secondary level, LSIS facilitated a middle school
prevention speaker, a high school drug trends program focusing on vaping prevention, and a Hidden in Plain
Sight parent presentation.
