111Physical EnvironmentGreen Champion ProgramGreen Champions are pillars of the Sustainable Schools Initiative and lead impactful sustainability endeavors to reduce waste and promote environmental awareness, empowering students and colleagues to take an active role in sustainability. Green Champions are making a lasting impact by inspiring sustainable practices Districtwide with 113 Google Classroom members and environmentally conscious teachers committed to collaboration, resource-sharing, and strengthening their commitment to environmental leadership. 40 Green Champions and 10 community partners attended the Environmental & Conservation Services 4th annual Sustainability Symposium. 69 Green Champions conducted recycling audits that identified opportunities for waste reduction. Green Champion participation in Sustainable Schools Initiatives resulted in increased engagement amongst students and staff, with 15 schools collecting over 60,500 wrappers in the 2024 Unwrap the Waves candy wrapper recycling initiative. Additionally, 37 schools and facilities have developed Sustainable Schools Action Plans, which are the foundation for long-term environmental stewardship, through goal setting and establishment of green teams. The Sustainable Schools Initiative and Green Champion program ensure that the District remains committed to conserving resources, strengthening community partnerships, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship in every school and facility.Students Climate CoalitionThe Student Climate Coalition (SCC) provides a platform for students to lead environmental and sustainability initiatives at their schools, across the District, and in their communities. Students representing the Central, North, and South regions promoted sustainable practices while amplifying student voice in decision-making. The SCC members, along with like-minded, aspiring green team student leaders District-wide, participate in the annual Earth Month student presentation to the School Board during the April 23, 2025 school board meeting, during which students share perspectives on sustainability, while advocating for continued environmental action within the District. The FY25 Coalition cohort collaborated on an electronic magazine (e-zine), highlighting their collective efforts to advance environmentally focused projects on their school campuses and in their communities. The e-zine was distributed to student peers, District employees, and highlighted in District communications, showcasing the importance and impact of student voice.The SCC membership, interest, and continued growth indicates a strengthening of student leadership in sustainability, and fostering real-world environmental impact on school campuses.
