                                    90 FY25 Wellness Promotion Policy (WPP) Annual Report Back to MenuHealth EducationWellness Efforts in Extended Learning The Department of Extended Learning (Afterschool Programming) is committed to offering high quality outof-school time opportunities for students across the District. It provides a variety of support to 92 Elementary Afterschool Programs, 38 Middle School Afterschool Programs (MSAS), and 38 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), all of which are grant-funded programs. Elementary School ProgramsElementary afterschool programs provide structured, safe, and enriching initiatives before and after school hours. The daily schedule allows time for healthy snacks, homework opportunities, academic enrichment, technology use, and outdoor physical play. Students participate in arts and crafts, music, dance, and many Expanded Learning Opportunities. A variety of club opportunities are also offered across the District:%u25cf Robotics/Coding %u25cf Spanish%u25cf STEM%u25cf Chess%u25cf Sports%u25cf Cheerleading%u25cf Band%u25cf Step Team%u25cf Theatre%u25cf GardeningDaily schedules include organized physical play, group games, outdoor time, and playground activity.Middle School ProgramsThe Middle School Afterschool (MSAS) programs play a crucial role in promoting the holistic development and well-being of students, complementing the efforts of schools and families in fostering healthy behaviors early on. The 38 MSAS programs addressed health education in the following effective ways:%u2022 Nutrition and Cooking WorkshopsStudents learn about balanced diets, reading food labels, and how to prepare healthy snacks or meals. These hands-on activities teach lifelong skills and encourage healthier eating habits at home.%u2022 Physical Fitness and Sports ActivitiesDaily opportunities for exercise%u2014such as basketball, dance, yoga, or walking clubs%u2014help students stay active, reduce stress, and understand the importance of regular physical activity for long-term health.%u2022 Mental Health and Wellness SessionsPrograms may offer mindfulness exercises, journaling, or group discussions that promote emotional regulation, stress management, and positive relationships.%u2022 Partnerships with Health Professionals and Community AgenciesCollaborations with local nurses, dietitians, counselors, and fitness instructors bring expert knowledge to students in accessible, engaging ways.
