World Languages and Seal of Biliteracy
World Language course offerings were expanded in FY24 to include Russian, bringing the total count of World Languages
offered in the District to nine (American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese,
Russian, and Spanish), with Advanced Placement/AICE/International Baccalaureate options available in French, Italian,
Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Students across the District can develop multilingual skills and global competencies
through these courses. In alignment with encouraging and recognizing students who have attained proficiency in at least
two languages, the Seal of Biliteracy Scholarship was launched in 2023. A total of $2,000 was awarded to each of the inaugural
awardees to support their postsecondary pursuits. The District continues to promote the benefits of multilingualism by
encouraging students to earn the Florida Seal of Biliteracy. Most recently, 1,248 graduates of the Class of 2023 earned the
        State’s recognition.

Project Graduation for English Language Learners
To assist schools in preparing senior English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students for the American College
Testing (ACT) and Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) tests and achieve Reading concordant scores for graduation, the
Department of Multicultural Education worked with 14 schools to provide weekly support in small groups to work with
students on ACT and SAT test-taking strategies.

The department also successfully implemented the State Board of Education’s adopted amendment to Rule 6A-1.09422,
which provides alternative graduation pathways for ESOL students who have recently enrolled in the program and have
met all graduation requirements except passing the statewide ELA assessment. This contributed to the increase in the
graduation rate of our ELL students and the District.
