Indoor Air Quality In FY20, ECS developed a partnership with the District’s Health Services Specialist, Dr. Merris Smith and the
Florida Department of Health (FDOH) to improve and streamline the infectious disease response program,
During the FY20 school year, IAQ staff responded to a total of 769 IAQ inspection requests: including improved infectious disease outbreak prevention, treatment, and control. Strategies included
initiation of a 72-hour monitoring period before implementation of sanitizing services.
• 170 schools and 12 facilities were inspected
• 61 sites had 5 to 10 inspection requests
• Eight (8) sites had 10+ inspection requests

Green Schools Recognition Program

The Green Schools Recognition Program announced
its 2020 Green Schools. Green Schools promote
a positive and supportive school climate through
environmental topic areas, which include: School
Grounds Enhancement, School Sustainability, Health
and Well-being, Curriculum Integration, Community
Involvement and School-Wide Culture.

In FY20, the program recognized a record 134 schools
and we were thrilled that 89 of our District schools
were among those earning a prestigious Green School
status. The FAU Pine Jog Environmental Educational
Center (PJEEC) hosted a Virtual Awards Ceremony on
May 21, 2020.

ECS staff completed 611 IAQ projects utilizing 5 consultants and 6 contractors. H.L. Johnson Elementary placed 1st in the Top Overall Green School Category and Limestone Creek
Elementary earned 3rd place, and this category of awards was sponsored by FAU PJEEC. Mr. Scott Tomlinson,
Environmental and Conservation Services’ (ECS) staff coordinated twelve asbestos abatements, eleven Head Custodian of Highland Elementary won for Green Facilities Staff Member of the Year and Ms. Stacy Blow
demolitions and assisted in the demolition of seven Facility Construction projects. Asbestos inspections were Hernacki of Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary won for Green Food Service Staff Member of the Year, both
conducted at twenty-nine schools; each of the twenty-nine schools were inspected twice in FY20. sponsored by the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County.
