PROGRAM CONTINUATION
Program Continuation
Students assigned to a Choice Program do not need to reapply annually unless they are transitioning from elementary to middle school,
or middle to high school.
Failure to comply with the terms of the signed Choice Program Contract or agreed-upon program expectations can affect a student's
continued participation in the program. Students who do not meet the academic, attendance, or conduct standards may be placed on
probation. Continued issues, particularly significant disciplinary referrals, can lead to the student being exited from the program.
In most cases, students are exited from a program at the end of a marking period. However, a student may be removed immediately if
the situation involves a serious offense (defined as a Discipline Level 3 or 4), or upon the recommendation of a school-based committee
if the probationary contract terms are not being met.
Program Continuation after a Change of Address
Once a student is assigned to a program, they must continue to meet all residency requirements. Moving to a new address can impact
your child's continuation in their program. Any student who moves out of Palm Beach County will immediately forfeit their Choice seat.
The rules differ for In-House and Choice programs:
· In-House Programs (For Zoned Students Only): In-house programs are reserved exclusively for students who live within the school's
attendance boundary. If a student in an in-house program moves out of that school's zone at any time, they will no longer be eligible
to continue in the program and must enroll in their new zoned school.
· Choice Programs (In-Boundary): Assignment to a Choice program as an in-boundary applicant is based on the verified home
address. A student's seat assignment will be revoked at any time if it is discovered that they do not reside at the in-boundary address,
with limited exceptions as outlined in the Procedures Manual.
· Choice Programs (Out of Boundary): Students relocating to another address within Palm Beach County may continue in their
Choice program as an out-of-boundary student.
Involuntary Exit Appeals
Parents/legal guardians, on behalf of the student, may appeal an involuntary exit decision from a Choice school or program as outlined,
below. A request for an Appeal of Exit must be submitted in writing, using the appropriate form, PBSD 2418 - Choice Appeals Application,
within five (5) school days from the school’s written notice of its decision to exit the student. The form is available on the school district
website or you may request one by emailing choicequestions@palmbeachschools.org.
Choice Transportation
It's important for families to understand that transportation for Choice programs is different from the busing for a student's zoned
school. Choice transportation is provided for students in grades K-12, but only for those who live within the school's designated Choice
Transportation Zone.
You can find the official Transportation Zone maps for each school on the Department of Choice and Career Options website to verify
your eligibility. Since transportation is not provided for students living outside of the designated Choice Transportation Zone, families in
these areas must arrange for their own transportation.
· Centralized Bus Stops: Bus stops for Choice schools are limited and serve a wider geographic area. As a result, your child's assigned
stop may be significantly farther from your home than you are used to and may not be within walking distance.
· No New Stops Created: Students are assigned to the closest existing bus stop based on their home address. New bus stops will
not be created for Choice students.
· Parent Responsibility: It is the parent's or guardian's responsibility to ensure their child gets safely to and from the assigned bus
stop each day.
· Arts School Students: For specific information regarding transportation to Bak Middle School of the Arts and A.W. Dreyfoos School
of the Arts, please contact those schools directly.
