Adult & Community Education

The Department of Adult and Community Education plays a critical role in building the human
capital of the underserved community members with limited English language proficiency and
those who lack a high school diploma. Many of the 30,000 adult students served each year are
the parents of the District’s K-12 students. The department provides comprehensive instructional
programs designed to improve the employability of adult students by increasing the percentage
who enter post-secondary education and earn a degree, certificate, and industry certification. The
developed programs strengthen the occupational outlook of all students through the acquisition of
communication skills and cultural competencies that enhance the ability to read, write, speak, and
        listen in English.

        Services provided include:
          • Integrated Education and Training
          • Pre-Apprenticeship courses in Welding, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, and Carpentry
          • Apprenticeship courses in Electrical and HVAC, Commercial Driver’s License – Class A
          • Medical Programs in EKG Tech, Phlebotomy, Home Health Aide, Medical Lab Assisting
          • Family Literacy Programs at multiple elementary schools
          • Adult Basic Education, ESOL, Adult High School, and Adult High School (Co-enrolled)

During FY22, the department continued the rapid expansion of career training programs and
received over one million dollars in grants to help support equipment purchases for Delray Full
Service Center and other locations with a high demand for Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship
expansion. Through marketing to graduating high school seniors, the department awarded twenty-
two scholarships to students to attend medical, CDL, or one of the trade programs. This year, grant
funding will assist our trade program completers with a brand-new set of tools to begin their work
in the trades. The department continues its rapid expansion of workforce training by acquiring grant
funds and expanding business partnerships. The co-enrollment program helped high school students
complete 674 courses through after-school credit recovery using Adult Education Edgenuity.
