Homeless Education Program
The McKinney-Vento Program (MVP) supports homeless children and youth, including unaccompanied homeless youth
throughout the District, ensuring their educational rights under the guidelines of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance
Act are upheld. The McKinney-Vento Program removes the barriers and obstacles often faced by homeless children and
youth in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school through providing services and support at the school, District, and
community levels.
The team consists of the program planner, homeless liaison, academic support specialist, and MVP case managers. The
staff works collaboratively with schools, District departments, and community social service agencies to maximize access
to various educational, social, and enrichment programs needed to promote the academic success of homeless children and
youth. The MVP staff made significant strides this school year. Over 5,700 homeless students were identified, surpassing
last year’s identification number of 4,410. The MVP team also increased training significantly at their schools and various
community agencies.
A McKinney-Vento workgroup was formed with over 50 providers who meet monthly to collaborate and connect families
to available community resources in Palm Beach County (PBC). Additionally, MVP joined forces with the PBC Food Bank
to pack supplemental food bags each month for eligible students across the District. Most importantly, academic and
graduation coaches from Communities in Schools of PBC were placed at seven schools to provide tiered support to students
in the program ensuring a pathway toward academic stability and success.
