Safe Schools - Supporting Students in Foster Care
The Department of Safe Schools provides District-wide support to over 1,100 students removed from their families.
These students may be placed with a non-custodial parent, relative, licensed foster home, temporary shelter, or one of
20 group homes.
The Foster Care Liaison team receives daily documents from the court system when a parent has lost temporary custody.
The Student Information System (SIS) is updated by placing the parents’ information in the newly developed “Child Safety”
tab. This provides additional safeguards to prevent students from being released to parents who have lost custody.
The Safe Schools tutorial program provides afterschool tutoring and educational support for children and youth in
residential group homes. The program aims to provide personalized supplemental instruction to increase academic
achievement. District-certified teachers serve as tutors and utilize effective teaching strategies, relevant instructional
materials, and reliable data to impact student outcomes positively. The tutoring activities focus on skill remediation,
computer-based lessons, mentoring, and homework assistance through targeted data-driven instruction.
