Pre-Trip Inspection of the School Bus
The Bus Driver must thoroughly perform an inspection of his/her bus, or any other vehicle used to
transport students, prior to leaving the bus facility and getting on the road. If a bus Attendant is
assigned to the route, the bus Attendant must assist the Bus Driver. Here is what is expected:
Inspect your bus each time prior to leaving the facility even if nothing was noted on the pre-trip
inspection from the previous trip.
Complete the Pre-Trip Inspection Form (PBSD # 0454) each time and submit it in to dispatch. If
you have an AM/PM run, two forms must be submitted daily. An activity, field trip or a mid-day
would be an additional form.
Note each problem and/or malfunction on the Pre-Trip (PBSD # 0454) form. Submit this form to
the designated area at the assigned dispatch for the shop mechanic’s review. The mechanic will
determine whether to “down” the bus (deemed not safe for operation)
Notify your Coordinator immediately should a defect be found during a pre-trip inspection so that
a spare bus may be assigned. Be sure to submit a Pre-Trip form on the bus you were inspecting
and the spare bus that has been assigned.
If your radio is not working, please report the defect to dispatch prior to leaving the facility.
Never drive a bus if there is a defect unless the mechanic or dispatcher has cleared the bus for
operation. Student and driver safety may be compromised. Performing a pre-trip inspection could
prevent issues.
Upon approaching the school bus
The bus operator shall check the exterior of the bus for:
Fluid leaks
If the bus is leaning (possible flat tire)
Damage, vandalism or debris (graffiti, broken lens covers or windows)
When entering or exiting, the bus operator and attendant (if assigned) shall maintain 3 Point
Contact at all times:
Utilize 2 hands and 1 foot or 1 hand and 2 feet to support your body while entering or exiting
Always using the handrail/handrails

From the Operator’s seat
The Bus Driver shall check:

reached comfortably.
Proper seat adjustment gives you maximum visibility from your mirrors
