Qualifications of School Bus Drivers and Attendants
Selection and Getting Started
You should possess the following qualifications as an Operator or Attendant:
Capable of lifting and or carrying 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds
Pass pre-employment drug tests
Be of good moral character
The ability to work with children
Maintain flexibility in work scheduling (Ability to work early mornings and late evenings)
Read, write and communicate proficiently in English
Flexibility in maintaining continuous training for better job performance
Have a TEAM attitude
Bus Drivers Only:
Pass a DOT physical examination with a minimum of three (3) months expiration date
Must possess a valid Operator’s license with a minimum of five (5) years licensed driving
experience
Hold and maintain a clean driving record
Hiring Process
The following must be in place prior to your employment by the school district:
1. Completed online job application
2. Be interviewed by a Transportation, Human Resource or Recruitment and Retention
Department team
3. Background review of your motor vehicle records, with conviction of no more than one (1) in
any one year for the preceding three (3) years. Must also meet school board policy 3.21
(School Bus Drivers)
4. Clearance by the Human Resource Department
5. A “Satisfactory” Criminal Background check
6. Pass a pre-employment drug screening
7. Pass a physical dexterity screening (school Bus Drivers)
8. Pass a physical demand test (school bus Attendants)
9. Secure a DOT physical with at least a 6 month expiration date
10. Pass Proficiency Test
Probationary Status
All new employees are probationary for ninety (90) working days. After this period, and after
demonstrating adequate job competencies, new employees will become a regular school Bus
Driver or school bus Attendant if a permanent position is available. Probationary status may be
extended pass (90) working with the approval of the Director.
