Training Requirements for School Bus Drivers and Attendants
Operators and Attendants must be accepted into the Transportation Services Department’s
training program and must complete all phases of the training program successfully and on time.
School Bus Driver
1. Must successfully complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of classroom instruction
2. Must successfully complete a minimum of eight (8) hours behind-the-wheel training
3. Must be the holder of a Florida Commercial Operator License, Class “A” or “B” with Passenger
(P) and School Bus (S) endorsements and be without any air brake restriction.
4. Ability to drive conventional, front or rear engine transit buses and any other district owned
bus.
5. Must display the ability to manage student behavior on the bus
After initial training, a minimum of eight (8) hours of annual in-service training provided by the
transportation services department must be completed.
School Bus Attendant
1. Must successfully complete classroom instruction
2. Must successfully complete on-the-bus training, which includes: pre/post trip lift operation
inspection, wheelchair tie downs (securement), wheelchair occupant securement, child
safety restraint systems, and student behavior management
After initial training, a minimum of four (4) hours of annual in-service training, provided by the
transportation services department must be completed
Break in Service from Job Duties/Re-employment
School Bus Driver
Less than one year:
Must complete eight (8) hours of in-service training provided by the Transportation Services
Department
A back-to-duty drug test
A new DOT annual physical with at least 3 months certification and a dexterity test
One year or more:
Must complete the entire pre-employment training program again, exclusive of the CDL training if
CDL is still active or eligible for reactivation.
Bus Attendants
Less than one year:
