        Character Counts

A foundation of ethics, values, and consideration of the common good underlie a community that serves
its members, protects its needy, and supports the ethical treatment of all. Children and adolescents build
enduring beliefs about what is good or bad and what is important in life. These values serve as broad guidelines
for living and provide an orientation for one’s desired future.
The Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship)
are adopted by The School District of Palm Beach County to guide students on this journey. They provide
detail as to the kinds of knowledge, actions, and dispositions that contribute to a positive and supportive
school climate, interpersonal success, and academic achievement.

The School District of Palm Beach County supports the development of ethical foundations of behavior
in youth. The School District of Palm Beach County’s current (2016-2021) Strategic Plan: Growing Strong,
reflects a commitment to “ensuring a safe and supportive school climate that promotes the social/emotional and
        academic development of all students.”

Positive student character is showcased and students are recognized through newspaper articles, awarding
certificates, and this annual recognition event, held virtually for the 2020-2021 school year. We congratulate
these students, their parents, their teachers, counselors, and school administrators for leading by example
        every day.

Over 92 District schools participated in the Character Counts End of the Year Virtual Celebration program for
the 2020-2021 school year, honoring many students for their exemplary acts of character during the pandemic.
They recognized student representatives from 85 schools for their demonstration of one or more of the Six
        Pillars of Character.

State Mandated Mental Health, Child Trafficking, and Substance
        Abuse Education Curriculum

In accordance with the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE - Rule Board Rule 6A-1.094124), schools will
provide annual youth substance abuse instruction and child trafficking prevention education to students in
grades K-12, and five hours of mental health education in grades 6-12. School Counselors, other school-based
mental health professionals, and trained teachers deliver the required instruction-using curriculum provided
        by Suite360.

Schools can also opt to deliver an alternative curriculum for the child trafficking and substance abuse education
requirements using the resources provided on the K-5 and 6-12 “SDPBC Toolkit of Community Agencies for
Substance Abuse Prevention and Child Trafficking Prevention Education.”
