COMMUNITY
The CAPE Team is composed of credentialed and skilled staff that are both flexible and proactive in responding
to students that are experiencing significant persistent or acute mental health or behavioral health crises on
a school campus. The CAPE Team has further refined its mission to meet the needs of students and schools
engaged in Distance Learning, while still operating in four (4) sites covering the entire District. The Team
pivoted to increase collaboration with schools and improve service to students, schools, and families. Using a
blend of Google Meet and face-to-face interactions, the team continued to provide intensive behavioral and
mental health support to students and schools. Through 312 contacts with schools, CAPE Team members
dispatched for immediate assessment and intervention for students experiencing a significant mental health
crisis, collaborated with school teams in support meetings for students with complex/chronic behavioral
and mental health challenges, initiated bridge mentoring services with students, and engaged in case
management for families throughout the entire school year.
In addition to crisis and assessment work, the CAPE Team increased its prevention and education efforts
by creating and providing professional development through the Wellness Bucket offerings, Mental Health
101 and 102 courses, interdepartmental training, and sessions in the fall Student Mental Health and Wellness
Conference. In collaboration with others, the CAPE Team offered 28 training sessions on topics like Mindfulness
as a Coping Strategy in Times of Stress and Best Practices in De-Escalation; reaching 4,390 individuals.
Co-located Mental Health Professionals (MHP)
The Department provided school-based mental health care through the placement of agency employed,
co-located mental health professionals in schools to expand student access and supplement the work
of District mental health professionals (e.g., school counselors, school psychologists, family counselors) and
collaborative agencies through Behavioral Health Agreements. Co-located mental health professionals are
agency supervised and operate in alignment with school teams, policies, and procedures to provide individual
counseling to students at no cost to families. By being located on school campuses, they are able to integrate
into the school culture through participation in school-based activities and teams.
