Staff Development
All staff working in District elementary afterschool programs are highly qualified. To support staff and
comply with COVID-19 protocols, live trainings were provided through Google Meet and Google Classroom.
Mandatory as well as optional trainings were pre-recorded and available in eLearning. In addition to these
trainings, ten (10) hours of Professional Development must be completed annually. In order to assist programs
with this requirement, the Department of Extended Learning collaborated with other District’s departments
and its partners to offer training to staff throughout FY21.
Wellness for All
The Department of Extended Learning (Afterschool Programming) strives to make afterschool a positive
experience for every student it serves. As programs endeavor to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse
student population, the scope of training for staff continues to increase.
Training offered to afterschool site staff during SY21:
o Afterschool Introduction to SEL - An overview of social emotional learning and how to integrate
these best practices into afterschool.
o Afterschool Playground Safety - Playground Safety training reviews the basics of proper playground
use and keeping students safe while outdoors. This training also describes the proper techniques for
accident reporting. This training is for employees that are new to afterschool.
o Afterschool SEL Connectedness Series - The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Connectedness
Series was created as a support to afterschool staff. It focuses on managing emotions, setting positive
goals, showing empathy for others and establishing positive relations and responsible decision-
making. A Google Classroom was shared with all participants linking them with valuable resources to
support students and families.
o EAP Trainings - These trainings address many aspects of work/life balance, allowing participants to
learn new skills, modify behaviors, improve communication techniques and utilize resources that
enhance personal and professional effectiveness.
o Positive Ways to Work With Children - This required training offers a variety of tools to assist all
afterschool staff in their routines while meeting the needs of students in a safe learning environment.
o Professional Crisis Management (PCM) - PCM focuses on four (4) primary strategies taught by
certified instructors. Strategies include crisis prevention, crisis de-escalation, crisis intervention,
and post crisis management. PCM training requires a twenty-two-hour course, a written exam and
a practical exam. Upon successful completion, participants are certified as PCM practitioners. The
Department of Extended Learning (Afterschool Programming) has three staff members certified as PCM
Instructors. During SY2, 80 staff were trained and received recertification in PCM.
