We accomplished this goal by ensuring our foster students are:%u2022 Allowed to remain in their current school when it is in their best interest, even when living outside the school%u2019s attendance zone.%u2022 Transitioned between schools in a seamless manner.%u2022 Supported and advocated for as they participate in all aspects of their education.%u2022 Provided with the necessary support to prevent dropout, truancy, and disciplinary issues. The Department of Safe Schools provides districtwide support annually to over 1,100 students who have been removed from their family. These students may be placed with a non-custodial parent, a relative, a licensed foster home, a temporary shelter, or in one of 20 group homes. The Foster Care Liaison team receives daily documents from the court systems when a parent has lost temporary custody. Student Information Services (SIS) is updated by entering the parent information in the SIS Child Safety tab. This provides additional safeguards to prevent students being released to parents who have lost custody.Neglected Group Homes Educational Supports and ServicesThe Safe Schools Tutorial Program offers after-school tutoring and educational support for children and youth in neglected residential group homes. The program aims to provide personalized, supplemental instruction to boost academic achievement.
