81The SSA program recruits and nurtures student leaders from various groups on school campuses to collaborate with adults in preserving positive campus climates. The program is based on the premise that students often see, hear, and understand aspects of campus interpersonal dynamics that adults may not, allowing them to act as influence agents in ways that adults cannot. Safe Schools Ambassadors are trained to use diplomatic communication skills in non-classroom settings to defuse conflicts, support targets, distract or reason with aggressors, and mitigate harmful behaviors such as cruel humor, harmful gossip, rumors, and intergroup prejudice. This program builds a cadre of skilled students who model, utilize, and extend high-level social and emotional learning (SEL) skills across elementary and secondary campuses, contributing to a peaceful environment on campuses. It maximizes the SEL capabilities of both Safe Schools Ambassadors and their advisors, equipping them to use positive approaches to problem-solving in classrooms, at home, and within the community. In FY25, the SSA training was rebranded, and a dedicated team of four trainers from the Department of Safe Schools provided comprehensive training to school teams. As a result, 33 school sites across the District%u2014including elementary, middle, and high schools%u2014received training, leading to 676 Safe School Ambassadors. Following the initial onsite training delivered by the Department of Safe Schools trainers, school site advisors meet with SSAs to provide supervision, debriefings, and ongoing program support.Positive & Supportive ClimateSafe School Ambassadors (SSA)
