This year’s focus was to significantly increase the number of students enrolled in advanced coursework
in middle school by having elementary school principals recommend their outgoing students’
schedules to the receiving middle school principals. Based on completed principal recommendations
for students entering grade 6, 57% of Black, 63% of Hispanic, and 85% of White students were
recommended for at least one advanced core course. This resulted in a seven percentage point over
representation of White students as well as three and five percentage points underrepresentation
of Hispanic and Black students, respectively.
