Extended Learning
The Department of Extended Learning collaborates with governmental and community agencies to improve and expand
academic, enrichment, and recreational opportunities for approximately 20,000 pre-kindergarten through school-age
children in 93 District elementary schools, 70+ camps in elementary schools, and 36 middle school afterschool programs.
Extended Learning is committed to fostering safe, positive activities for students to explore their interests and develop their
talents.
K-5 Programs
The K-5 programs transitioned to a new online platform for managing afterschool registration, payments, attendance, and
electronic sign-out. This platform supports families by providing real-time information. The department also worked with
stakeholders to increase pay, provide retention incentives, and promote hiring events.
In February, the department held its first in-person meeting since
the pandemic. Board Member Erica Whitfield made a surprise visit
and offered words of support and encouragement as she shared why
she values the afterschool staff.
