56 SUPERINTENDENT ANNUAL REPORTEXTENDED LEARNINGThe Department of Extended Learning offers high-quality after-school programs that enrich students%u2019 experiences beyond the traditional school day. These programs promote academic growth, character development, and creative exploration in supportive environments for students in grades K through 5.Afterschool Programming and OperationsIn FY26, the department launched monthly Afterschool Director Dialogues. Directors submitted discussion topics in advance to ensure meetings addressed specific program needs and site-specific concerns. These sessions provided fiscal updates and operational reminders. Regional meetings further supported these efforts, featuring guest speakers who presented information to support afterschool program operations. This structure ensured directors received consistent guidance aligned with District priorities.Collaboration with the Department of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) expanded to support afterschool staff serving students with special needs. ESE staff provided targeted training for afterschool directors, focusing on strategies to assist both students and staff. In FY26, the STEM in a Box%u00ae pilot program expanded from 32 to 43 elementary afterschool sites. Participating sites received comprehensive training, implementation support, and site visits to ensure fidelity and effectiveness. 21st Century Community Learning Centers The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program provided academic enrichment during FY26, primarily supporting students in grades K through 5. Activities reinforced core academic skills and promoted social and emotional growth. Three strategic partnerships enhanced learning:%u2022 Friends of the Everglades enriched science instruction for students in grades 2 through 5 through inquiry-based activities.%u2022 The Alphabet Friends focused on literacy development, improving reading comprehension and vocabulary.%u2022 Chase Bank provided financial literacy education through workshops that equipped families with practical knowledge of credit and financial stability.Middle School The middle school program offered additiional learning opportunities aligned with the District%u2019s commitment to student well-being. Under the theme #Level Up: Taking Afterschool to the Next Level, the middle school program expanded access to inclusive experiences for middle school students.The department used student surveys to inform planning and continuous improvement. The feedback provided insights into students%u2019 interests and engagement levels. The directors analyzed this data to refine activities and introduce new offerings that reflect adolescents%u2019 developmental needs. Programs balance academic support with enrichment, including leadership development, sports, and creative arts.
