1 Adoption - 5/31/2006

• Conversations started in 2004 because of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004.
• Policy needed to include goals on nutrition education, physical activity, other school-based activities,
and nutrition standards.
• Needed to involve parents, students, community stakeholders and District leaders in the establishment
of this policy.
• Developed and adopted two documents (policy and goals and objectives).

• Included the goal of promoting wellness for District employees.
• Clarified who oversaw the implementation of Wellness Promotion Policy as statutory reference.
• Established a formal Wellness Promotion Task Force and developed its mission statement.
• Included providing for 150 minutes of physical education each week for K-5 students.
• Encouraged the usage of school physical activity facilities outside the normal school day.

• Began referencing other policies that impact Wellness to provide cohesiveness across the District and
additional guidance, such as the newly adopted Physical Education Policy (8.025) and Anti-Bullying
and Harassment Policy (5.002).
• Included the completion of a new Employee Wellness Consent Form (PBSD 2319).
• Included language regarding partnerships with local Health Department and the Health Care District
to provide students basic health screenings.
• Included language on barriers to learning and the importance of partnerships to address social,
emotional and/or behavioral health issues to include the implementation of the school counselor’s
Student Development Plan.
• Included alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention/intervention initiatives and programs at schools.
• Included the support and promotion of environmental stewardship.
• District vending machines accessible to students needed to aligned to the Alliance for a Healthier
Generation’s Beverage and Snack MOU.
• Competitive Food Sales limited to SFS Department.
• Breakfast time increased from 10 minutes to 15.
