Ensuring Quality Services for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students
During FY22, School Psychological Services established a collaborative partnership with the College of
Psychology at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to help enhance professional development for school
psychologists related to the assessment and support of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students.
This initiative, the Cultural and Linguistic Diversity: Planning, Response, and Efficiency Program (CLD PREP),
provided school psychologists with 45 hours of didactic training from experts in the field, such as Dr. Samuel
Ortiz and many others. Through this comprehensive training series, school psychologists were provided the
latest research on the relationships between language, culture, cognitive, academic, and social-emotional
development and how to utilize this information to help guide practices for CLD students.
Select trainings provided through the CLD PREP initiative include:
• Evidence-based Evaluation of English Learners: A comprehensive, systematic approach to
nondiscriminatory evaluation for all practitioners.
• Pre-referral Issues and Challenges in Evaluating Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students.
• Social Justice and ASD: Best Practices in Assessment with English Language Learners.
• Meeting the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Needs of a Diverse Student Population.
• Bias in Assessment: Guidelines for Administering, Scoring, and Interpreting Results.
• Deaf Culture and American Sign Language: Factors in the Assessment and Interventions of Deaf and
hard-of-hearing Students.
• Addressing Challenging Behaviors in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Students.
• Teacher/Caregiver Led Interventions for Improving Social Skills in Adolescents Identified as Culturally
and Linguistically Diverse (CLD).
• Applying Best Practices to Psychoeducational Reports for English Learners.
• Counseling Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students.
