Youth Mental Health First Aid
The District, along with the community Mental Health First Aid Coalition, began training in Youth Mental
Health First Aid (YMHFA) three years before the course was mandated by Florida Senate Bill 7026 in 2018.
Since that time, the YMHFA training has been provided each year.
The YMHFA course provides mental health awareness training to school-based and district staff so that
they have an increased awareness when non-academic needs arise in students, learn tools to intervene
appropriately and to connect the student to appropriate help. Course completers earn a three-year YMHFA
Certification. Approximately 5,000 staff members completed the course from FY16 through FY22. Total staff
members trained in YMHFA during FY22 was 1,153. An additional 325 staff members completed the YMHFA
Recertification course during FY22. The District plans to expand the program in FY23, with the goal of having
80% of the staff hold a three-year YMHFA certification by June 30, 2023.
