Healthy Lifestyles and Wellness is promoted in our schools through the Medical Sciences Academies at the middle and high school level. The Medical Sciences Academies offer an innovative, sequential and integrated learning environment designed to provide students with an academic foundation in basic health sciences including the study of diseases and disorders (such as childhood obesity, hypertension and diabetes), structure and function, occupational hazards, and educational requirements and information concerning the practices for promoting good health. It provides all students with a motivating, skill-based curriculum which teaches the medical skills and training necessary to succeed in post-secondary health career education and/or to successfully transition into the healthcare workforce. With the demand and shortage in health care, students will have endless opportunities and high paying jobs in the medical field.
The Medical Sciences Academies in middle school follow an honors curriculum preparing students to be highly competitive in the medical field. Students take high school credit courses including Medical Skills & Services and Algebra 1. Students become certified in First Aid and CPR in addition to completing a supervised medical internship. Continuing the commitment begun in the middle school programs, high school culinary arts students develop higher level knowledge and skills through safety and sanitation, healthy methods of food preparation and menu development, and earning industry certifications in SafeFood Handling, ServSafe and the National ProStart Certificate of Achievement. Combining food chemistry with nutrition and food preparation, these programs further develop students’ awareness and commitment to healthier eating habits and a personal wellness plan.
These career academies continue concepts learned in the middle school. High school students complete Health, Safety and Nutrition, one of the six components needed towards earning a staff credential from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Focusing on nutritional requirements as it relates to young children, students integrate this knowledge into the onsite preschools. This allows them to teach pre-schoolers about proper nutritional habits and exercise, thereby starting the process of developing personal wellness plans.
