Safe Schools - School Counseling and Graduation Support K-12

The School Counseling and Graduation Support Team supports the implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs through the employment of highly qualified school counselors; the development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive school counseling programs; the availability of professional development, consultation and supervision relevant to school counseling; and the use of performance appraisal instruments.

Student Development Plan

The Student Development Plan (SDP) is a comprehensive, developmental program designed to serve all K-12 students and prepare them for productive citizenship. It is based on national standards adopted by the American School Counselor Association, Florida Department of Education’s School Counseling and Guidance Framework, and research-based strategies. The plan is mandated by Florida Statute 1006.025.

The SDP will provide students with the necessary skills in the three domains: academic, personal/social and career success. The three interrelated components of the SDP include systems for delivery, management and accountability, all focused on student outcomes. Infused throughout the program are anticipated qualities of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration evidenced by school counselors, teachers, administrators, community and educational partners.

Program Services

Elementary, middle and high school counselors offer support to students and parents. Through counseling, coordination, and consultation, counselors provide information and skill development strategies to assist students in their educational, personal/social and career development.

One of the most important roles of the school counselor is to help students with making good decisions and setting/achieving goals. Counselors meet with students individually, in small groups, classroom settings and in large group presentations. School counselors work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, students, parents and the community to provide a comprehensive school-counseling program that is an integral and essential part of the total educational process. Additionally, counselors are familiar with many community resources that may be helpful to students and families.
