The Information Technology (IT) Division recently completed
the deployment of 16,500 Chromebook devices to elementary
schools and middle schools and continues deployment of
3,700 desktop computers for high school and alternative
school teachers.
Academic Leadership identified a need that all elementary school classrooms have six
computing devices to ensure all students have adequate time for computer rotations.
With this goal in mind, all elementary schools were surveyed and a gap of 13,400 units
was determined. Academic Leadership then identified some gaps at the middle school
level, and the additional 3,100 Chromebook devices were used to help address those
gaps.
Information Technology began the process of purchasing the devices in October 2016
with the goal of having devices to schools before the FSA window. We are proud to say
we have exceeded this timeline, and are ahead of schedule. High school and alternative
school teacher desktop computers were delivered to schools before the 2016 winter
break, and a majority of the installations occurred during the winter break to limit impact
to the schools. A small percentage is still continuing to be installed on nights and
weekends. Elementary school Chromebooks were successfully deployed to schools
prior to the 2016 winter break. Middle School Chromebook deployment continued in
early January 2017, to the remaining middle schools. Chromebooks are preconfigured
and are available for immediate use by students right out of the box.
