For some years, the District has discussed what education will look like with
both students and teachers having a mobile device. There are pros and
cons to such a drastic change in classroom technology. With the move to
distance learning at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtually all students
had access to a Chromebook. Teachers, however, were stuck with borrowing
Chromebooks from the student inventory, or working from their desktops or
personal devices.
In April 2021, teachers across the District were asked to provide feedback
regarding a laptop or desktop in the next device refresh to replace
their current set-up. Throughout April, teachers provided an incredible
amount of feedback. Simultaneously, teachers were shown a short video
showcasing the new laptop/docking station, and how it would look on
their desk. On June 15, 2021, Superintendent Mike Burke reported that the
survey showed the majority of teachers preferred laptops. So, for the first
time in District history, all teachers and students moved to a more flexible
mobile environment.
On the heels of that announcement, IT Technical Operations began gathering TEACHER LAPTOP
reports from Ivanti and Destiny and matching them with staffing reports. This
data was used to determine the number of device bundles needed for all REFRESH PROJECT
schools and teachers. The project was divided into two phases - Phase 1
would target elementary and middle schools, Phase 2 would focus on high
schools and alternative sites.
A total of 9,500 device bundles were ordered for Phase 1. The first devices
arrived in late September to three pilot schools that volunteered to help refine
the deployment process. The remaining devices arrived between October and
mid-November. Since then, all schools have been working diligently to get
them in the hands of their teachers.
Phase 2 for high schools and alternative sites was initially slated for next
school year. Based on the positive reception of Phase 1, combined with the
urgent need for devices and working to minimize supply shortages, the District
attempted to get high schools and alternative sites their devices sooner than
originally planned. At this time, devices are expected to be in the high schools
by March!
Overall, this project has meant a huge change for our classroom teachers.
With that change came some initial growing pains, but by leveraging resources
including videos, training, and documentation, the feedback is that teachers
are very much enjoying their new laptops!
Thank you to all involved with this project, especially our teachers and School
Techs who are taking time to follow this new process and for providing much
needed feedback to ensure project success.
