NYU Teacher Residency Program
To recruit and develop the best teachers for our highest-needs schools, the NYU Teacher Residency
Program (TRP) began in August 2019 at JFK and PBL. Since then, 12 residents have earned their
Master’s Degree, and 10 have remained in continuous employment in the District. Six new residents
will begin the TRP for FY23. Each resident will receive $10,000 in tuition assistance from the District,
$22,800 in salary, and full benefits. Residents are paired with an experienced/clinical education
credentialed mentor teacher who coaches, shares their classrooms, and helps residents build
instructional efficacy through the gradual release model. Residents receive a supplement of $ 4,500.
After completing the program, the residents will transfer to a permanent teaching position at JFK,
PBL, or comparable schools in the District for a minimum of two additional years.
Virtual Recruitment Chats
The Department of Recruitment & Retention hosted a series of “recruitment chats” for instructional
and non-instructional positions in the District. Recruitment themes included: District-wide general
educators, Exceptional Student Education, Speech Language Pathologists, Extended Learning,
ESOL, and High needs priority schools. In collaboration with the Communications Department, we
marketed the events via the Indeed hiring platform, social media, recruitment flyers, and District-
website. Potential applicants heard vibrant panel discussions on why the SDPBC is a great place to
start and grow their careers. Panelists included directors, principals, teachers, assistant principals,
HR partners, and other HR team members. Panelists spotlighted their departments and schools.
These chats were fun and informative and have shown to be successful in attracting prospective
applicants to schools.
Filling Non-Instructional Vacancies
The Department of Recruitment & Retention is actively recruiting non-instructional applicants to
fill various trades positions, which include HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other industry-specific
trades. Recruitment efforts are focused on West Tech Academy graduates in Belle Glade and
engagement with qualified candidates from the community. Partnership with Career Source and
targeted job fairs continue to support non-instructional recruitment efforts.
Retention Highlights
Building Teacher Pipelines/Grow Our Own Initiatives
Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA) and Teachers of Tomorrow (ToT) Programs
These programs provide opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students to become
aware of careers in education and nurture their interest in teaching as a career by providing hands-
on, classroom-based experiences. We currently have 59 schools participating.
Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA) Scholarship
Eight Future Educators of America Scholarships (FFEA) were offered to non-instructional staff and
high school seniors, and they have been offered unassigned contracts to return to the District for
teaching positions upon graduation.
Paid Internship (In Progress and Near Completion)
Regular employees who take a Student Teaching Leave, get paid their current salary, and maintain
benefits. Schools can hire an interim for their position. Students who are SDPBC graduates and
complete their internship program in the District, with the expectation that they will teach in the
District upon graduation, are paid during their student teaching experience, regardless of the
university program.
